West Coast Living with Todd Talbot

Living Large in Sea to Sky Country

Summer is spectacular in Whistler, British Columbia, and there are events every weekend with something for everyone including the Pemberton Music Festival, the Crankworx Mountain Bike Festival, The Beer Festival, and the BBQ Championships, to name a few. And you thought it was all about skiing.

There is another event that is making tracks, literally—The Ultimate Supercar Charity Challenge Rally, also known as the Diamond Rally. This year, my wife and I channelled our inner ‘Austin Powers’ and drove the new Jaguar F-Type fully wrapped in the Union Jack with 160 Supercars travelling from Vancouver to Pemberton.

The day climaxed at the Pemberton airfield where drag races took over a quarter mile of runway set against a cascading mountain backdrop. But all this adrenaline-pumping, heart-racing fun was for a good cause with each car raising money for some great charities.

Great coffee

You can create your own Diamond Rally experience with a supercharged weekend along the Sea to Sky highway by renting a Supercar from Scenic Rush and heading to your first stop, the Galileo Coffee Company. Set in a converted historic old character home, right off the highway beside the famous Britannia Copper mine, the coffee house boasts a trail of patrons coming and going. You can’t miss it and you know it’s gotta be good.

Four Seasons resort

Check in at the stunning Four Seasons Resort Whistler for the ultimate in customer service and luxury accommodation. Bring your pets, too. They’re welcome in your executive suite with full kitchen. laundry and 200 sq. ft. balcony overlooking lagoon-like pools.

Just 30 minutes north of Whistler, tee up at one of the most beautiful golf courses in the country. Big Sky is worth the drive and will work up your appetite for comfort food at Mile One Eating House. The burger here is for real because Mile One believes “the food you eat ought to be as genuine as the people you share your table with.”

On top of the world

In Whistler, you can experience one of the most impressive helicopter rides in the world! Lift off in the A-star helicopter and fly over Canada’s largest, southernmost ice cap to explore enchanting natural ice sculptures, ice floes and gentle slides. Your guide will lead you through a labyrinth of frozen chambers where you will sit in awe of natural aqua blue ambient light penetrating through the ice.

Whistler Village

Enjoy a stroll after sunset through European-style pedestrian streets and you will find one of Whistler’s new hotspots: Bar Oso. Try the beef tartare or the signature house-made charcuterie with your gin and tonic served with flare.

A couple days living the high life in Sea to Sky country may make you pause on the way out the door and say, “How cool would it be to buy a place here?” The price of real estate in this region is reflecting the fact that more and more people are realizing the attraction to this area and the lifestyle you get with it. Right now, you can purchase a five-bedroom, seven-bathroom, 7,000 sq. ft. home on 5.24 acres for $22,000,000 complete with garage door opener. Or you can start planning next year’s supercharged weekend today. -H
