Own This Texas Glass House for $2.6 Million

Texas mid-century modern waterfront estate restored by architect Bill Caudell is now for sale, priced at $2.6 million.

Thought to be renowned Houston architect Edmund Furley’s only surviving coastal structure and built in 1955, this mid-century modern waterfront estate was discovered by well-known Texas architect Bill Caudell while driving around the Clear Lake residential section in League City one Sunday afternoon.

When he spotted it, he later described his initial impression as, “A 5,000-square-foot architectural relic.” Painted blue, overgrown and with the gates locked, Caudell was intrigued and soon bought it.

Caudell returned the spacious two-story building back into its palatial self by removing walls, elevating ceilings and adding a long dock and two-story boathouse, replacing the dark square box of a boathouse that had been at the edge of the water.

He later sold it to prominent plastic surgeon Steven Hamilton, who created the sumptuous garden on the west-side which includes lily ponds and other tropical plants.

With two-story walls of glass overlooking Clear Lake and the gardens, the house is sited on one-half acre and includes three bedrooms and four baths. The ground level has a spacious open floor plan perfect for casual lounging by the fireplace or entertaining a large group. The main kitchen is outfitted with Viking appliances and there is also a catering kitchen. The master suite on the second level contains a spa bath and an elevator makes between-floor travel seamless. Outside, upper and lower terraces afford panoramic views of the gardens and lake along with the dock and boathouse.
