The National Home Show’s 4 Coolest Home Tech Devices
This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending the National Home Show at the Enercare Centre in Toronto.
Of course, my first stop was to visit my friends at the Hoss booth and have some pictures and video taken! In exploring the show, I had the opportunity to check out the new Edyn Garden Sensor, which is a very fun and cool idea. You stick this small yellow solar re-charging probe in your garden and connect it to your WiFi. After that, you can set up the Edyn to know what plants you are monitoring and it can send you push notifications about your garden, including watering needs, humidity, soil nutrition, temperature, etc. I have no idea how well it works, but I love the idea!
The next new and exciting product I saw was the iRobot Roomba 980. This is an automated vacuuming system. It can vacuum an entire floor of your house and you can check up on its progress from your smartphone. It has what iRobot calls iAdapt 2.0 Navigation, which uses a high-efficiency cleaning pattern and a full suite of sensors to map and adapt to real-world clutter and furniture for thorough coverage. It even memorizes landmarks so that it does not lose track of where it is or where it has been!
Then I checked out a WiFi-enabled appliance from Samsung— the fridge called The Family Hub, which was totally sick (model RF28K95800SR). It has multi-tasking capabilities that connects families, organizes groceries and home to-do lists, and even provides HDTV entertainment! The Family Hub centres around a 21.5” full HD LCD resolution screen. There are three high-quality cameras inside the fridge that take pictures every time the fridge door is closed to track what groceries you have and the levels of the contents. You can leave notes for other family members, watch TV, use the remote app and see what you are low on when you are at the grocery store. You just never know when you actually need milk or how much ketchup you have left!
And then I had a chance to play with the August Smart Lock. The device integrates with any door lock that has a thumb latch and mounts over top of the thumb latch mechanism and converts the lock into an app-accessible device with push notifications from anywhere in the world! If you pair it up with the August Video Doorbell Cam, you now have the ability to see who is coming and going and be notified every time there is video movement and review the recordings. Also, the August devices can partner up with your Home and Away functions of Nest thermostats.
