Driven for Inspiration at Home
Car style creates fun home decor space
Modern life is tied to technology. And while we think of our smart phones as the first line of tech-life, our cars have been essential to our modern lifestyle for so much longer.
Looking at our usage by the numbers, there are 1.2 billion vehicles on the road today, for the 7.5 billion people on planet Earth, and the vehicle ownership is expected to double in the next few decades, according to Transportation Research Board.
With all of those cars being built, I’m inspired by the upcycle and inspiration potential of the vehicles we love, both the modern and classic styles. While you may think an auto-inspired room is would fit best in a man cave, auto inspirations can fill any room in a home.
If you’d like to try out the car-style in your next home décor project, I have a few tips keep your unique style while celebrating the automobile.
Color. The best way to include an automobile inspiration is through color. Think of the classic car colors, like bold red paired with chrome. Used singularly against a subtle backdrop, most friends will think classic car without having to do much else. And for most of us, a red classic car makes us smile.
Material. Leather, chrome, and metal are ideal textures in a car inspired space. If you use them together, the feeling will become vehicular without having to include any steering wheel lighting or trunk upcycled coolers.
Whimsy. There’s the fun part of car inspiration, where upcycle happens. Yes, a sofa, light fixture, or door knob can be made from a car part. A rearview mirror could be fun in a bathroom, and a bumper might be an interesting addition to a bed frame. Using these elements as distinct singular celebrations create sophisticated charm. If you are an auto-enthusiast, and want to shout from the sofa that you love vehicles, then use all of them throughout your home.
At the end of the day, our homes are places to make us feel safe, inspired, and delighted.
We’d love to see you at our next #HOSSdesign Twitter chat on Wednesday, March 15th at 8pm when we’ll be showing-and-sharing ideas and inspirations for fun car décor and upcycles.
