Toolbox Takeover: Chris Grundy

Q: MY FAVOURITE TOOL THAT I USE THE MOST IS... A: My favourite tool that I use the most is my relationships with other experts, contractors, designers, hosts and the like. I love asking for help and different ideas. Learning from other people is one of the best parts of my job.

Q: THE TOOL EVERY CONSUMER SHOULD HAVE IN THEIR HOUSE IS...

A: I’m all about having a variable speed cordless hammer drill near me all the time. It’s good for so many different situations – from small craft projects to drilling into concrete. It’s also great for pretending you’re on a S.W.A.T. team!

Q: I WISH THERE WAS A TOOL FOR...

A: This is one I can’t answer, because as much as I’ve seen, I haven’t seen everything!

Q: THE TOOL I USE FOR SOMETHING OTHER THAN ITS PRIMARY PURPOSE IS...

A: A flathead screwdriver gets used for a lot more than just driving screws. It’s a good chisel, demo tool, pry tool, elevation tool, measuring stick – I’ve even used it to spread the mayo on my sandwich!

Q: THE NUMBER ONE TOOL THAT CONTRACTORS SHOULD HAVE IS...

A: Gotta have a tape measure!

Q: THE TOOL THAT I HAVE TO REPLACE THE MOST OFTEN IS...

A: Blades, Bits and Batteries!!

Q: I THINK THE MOST UNDERUSED TOOL IS...

A: The courage to ask for help.

Q: THE TOOL THAT I MOST OFTEN SEE BEING USED INCORRECTLY IS...

A: Safety glasses get misused by not being used.

Q: THE TOOL YOU HAVE TO BE THE MOST CAREFUL OF DURING USE IS...

A: The tool I keep my eye, and mind, on the most is the table saw. The blade is moving over 100mph on the outside edge! It seems like a simple tool, but any type of kickback or small distraction can completely change your day!

Q: THE TOOL I AM MOST LIKE IS...

A: A sledgehammer – because I like to come in, clear out the things I don’t need and start with a clean slate...

Chris Grundy is the Host of DIY’s Cool Tools and Blog Cabin 2012, 2013 & 2014, and of HGTV’s Home Strange Homes and Professional Grade. A tool expert and avid do-it-yourselfer, Chris is the first to admit his enthusiasm often outweighs his expertise. If he's unsure how to tackle a project, he just forges ahead and calls his friends over to bail him out. Grundy grew up in the Chicago area and moved to Denver in the mid-'90s to pursue an acting career. As an actor and improv performer, including stints with Second City in Los Angeles and Denver and sit-coms on ABC and NBC, Chris has been making people laugh for years – mostly, intentionally.
